LEYTE, PHILIPPINES, 23 July 2017 – A-PAD Philippines, in partnership with the Leyte Center for Development (LCDE) and Rotary District International 3860, responded to 1,682 families affected by the magnitude 6.5 earthquake which struck the province of Leyte on July 6. Its epicenter was located eight kilometers southwest of Jaro, Leyte and had a depth of two kilometers. A-PAD distributed food (1l cooking oil, dried fish, mung beans, sardines, corned beef, &10-kilo rice) and non-food items (flashlight, plastic sheets, rope, sleeping mats, blankets, water containers,& hygiene kit) to communities in Ormoc City (Barangay Gaas, Danao & Liberty) and Kananga Municipality (Barangay Mahawan & Libertad).

Chairman Hermogenes B. Cochesa of Barangay Mahawan, Kananga is very grateful of the aid their village received. “Dakong pasalamat namo sa inyong mga hinabang diri, sa mga relief goods, usa sa mga nakatabang sa akong mga tao. (Thank you very much for the assistance you provided to us, for the relief goods, one of those who have greatly helped my constituents.),”Cochesa said.

Displacement of families (especially those living in the upland areas) is the biggest concern in the earthquake’s aftermath. Rosalia Magno, 42, an earthquake survivor from Sitio Maglahug, Barangay Gaas, Ormoc City said that the earthquake displaced all the sitio’s (local term for sub-village) 182 families in evacuation centers. She further reported severe damage to infrastructure including houses, school and road, and loss of livelihood in the area. People are living in their temporary shelters made of plastic sheets and bamboo. Additionally, since July 10, classes have not yet resumed. A temporary school will be built soon in the site.

A-PAD’s local partners continue to monitor the situation in the affected areas in coordination with the local government units.
