Members of the business sector, academe, civil society organization, and the local government from different regions in Visayas gathered to take on an integrated approach in enhancing disaster preparedness and response initiatives.

Asia-Pacific Alliance for Disaster Management (A-PAD) Philippines, through Citizens’ Disaster Response Center (CDRC) and Cebu-Bohol Relief and Rehabilitation Center (CRRC), organized the multi-sectoral conference on February 23, 2016 at Cebu Century Plaza Hotel.

With the theme: “Building Unity and Cooperation Towards Efficient Disaster Response”, representatives from different sectors acknowledged the need for cooperation in developing efforts for disaster management.

Key stakeholders in Visayas shared their roles, participation, and challenges of DRR projects in their sector. Office of Civil Defense Region VII Director Olivia M. Luces presented the region’s disaster situation and corresponding plans to cope up the challenges brought by disasters. The lack of communication and coordination in between sectors was identified as among the major challenges in delivering a dynamic and resourceful disaster risk reduction and response.

Participants recommended the formation of a coordinating body, which will be composed of members from different sectors, to plan, systematize, and harmonize disaster management initiatives. A series of consultation meetings will be set forth after the conference to administer the proposals.

“This gathering will be a start of future endeavors in building unity towards the realization of an effective disaster response,” Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) Head Baltazar Tribunalo said.

He also hoped for the successful implementation of the major development agenda of his province, such as disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation and environmental program, through joint efforts of all stakeholders.

A-PAD is a trans-national disaster aid and management alliance that works for cooperation and understanding between governments and private sectors within the Asia Pacific region. As member organizations of A-PAD, CDRC and Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation (PDRF) are spearheading the formation of A-PAD platform in the Philippines in order to strengthen the participation of the private sector and other stakeholders in disaster risk reduction and response.
